Educational Objectives
Our graduates will be;
- Designers; by using their fundemantal materials science and engineering knowledge to design, select and improve materials, product and processes.
- Problem solvers; by using their technical skills, knowledge on basic science and applied metallurgical and materials engineering and relationships among structure – properties – processes – performance of materials for finding creative solutions and to advance society, science and technology.
- Professionals; who are aware of lifelong learning and demonstrate the global/societal, ethical, environmental responsibilities and values in finding solutions.
- Leaders and team members; who are recognized by their effective communication and contribution in inter-disiplinary teams.
And the department’s program educational objectives are to provide its graduates with:
- a sound basis and application skills in mathematics, physics, chemistry, physical chemistry and basic engineering,
- knowledge in the use of techniques and equipment required for modern engineering applications and the ability to utilize this knowledge in design, application and communication,
- the skills required to characterize structure-property-processing and performance of materials, and the metallurgical production parameters with standard or self designed experimental techniques and to interpret the results,
- the knowledge of the basic concepts of metallurgy and materials science and engineering and the ability of materials evaluation within the framework of structure-property-process-performance relations,
- intensive knowledge in the production of metallic and non-metallic materials from primary and secondary resources and in the processes and technologies related to processing, and protection of these materials, and the ability to apply this knowledge in the application and development,
- the tools necessary to define engineering problems, choose and design suitable material, system, product, and process, and to transform these into projects which are economically sound whilst taking into consideration the conservation of the environment and quality of the product,
- professional and ethical responsibilities in following and evaluating contemporary and social developments, oral and written communication skills, a teamwork environment, and the desire to continuously learn and progress.
The program education objectives are also shared with public through department strategic plans, informative documents (handouts, brochures) and the department web site (http://www.mme.itu.edu.tr/en/abet/ ). Our freshman students are informed every year in “101 Introduction to Metallurgy and Materials Engineering and Enginering Ethic” course and this information is given to each student in written form.
